After a relaxed mid year break, MXD rider Hugh McKay showed blinding speed for WBR Bulk Nutrients at Nowra, giving the WBR team their first moto win of the year.

After qualifying inside the top 5, Hugh managed his best start of the season rounding the first corner in second place. Hugh initially rode at a measured pace behind Cooper Pozniak who was leading, but before mid race he took an opportunity to pass and didn’t look back – putting a gap on the pack with a win that was never in doubt.

It was a commanding win for Hugh who was clearly the fastest rider on the track. In the second MXD moto, Hugh started in around 6th position and worked his way into 4th after several passes, eventually moving into 3rd place. Due to some confusion on the track, Hugh got stuck behind a rider who had incorrectly re-entered the track, which lead to an error on Hugh’s behalf.

Frustrated, Hugh lost several places, where he finished the moto in 8th (later relegated to 7th). In a major surprise, Hugh was initially deadlocked with two other riders for first place on 58 points apiece, but due to a protest Hugh was awarded a clear second place overall for the day.

In the MX2 class an excited Connor Tierney was raring at the bit to make his Nationals debut in the senior class after missing the first half of the season. Here, mid year training with Aaron Tanti had gone very well, both guys confident of strong finishes lining up at the start line.

As luck would have it both boys got tangled up with each other in the first corner after firing off the line, resulting in them losing almost a minute to the leaders. From there both Aaron and Connor rode solidly, finishing up in 14th and 16th respectively managing to salvage what they could in terms of points.

In the second moto, both Aaron and Connor got poor starts, when things went from bad to worse for Aaron, where he lost his chain early, resulting in a DNF.

Connor faired marginally better, after losing several places on the first lap he settled into a rhythm and ended up finishing his second moto in 12th place. While the day was one to forget for both MX2 boys, Team manager Travis Whitten was thrilled to see Hugh McKay show his potential.

Hugh is generally not someone who comes out with blinding pace, rather a guy who progresses over time. With a top 5 spot in the championship, Hugh is excited about what he can achieve from here, timing his run very well.
