Cairoli splits wins with Herlings for Portugal victory

Seewer claims second-consecutive win against Jonass.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammates Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings tied on points at Portugal’s 12th round of the 2017 FIM World Motocross Championship last weekend, each sharing a win before Cairoli was determined the victor on count back.

The win marks his second in as many races for the multi-time world champion, who raced to a 2-1 scorecard in sweltering temperatures to extend his points lead to 91.

As Herlings was forced to take second, the final spot on the podium was credited to Suzuki World MXGP’s Arminas Jasikonis, a career best finish for the youthful talent.

2015 world champion Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing) claimed fourth with 5-4 results, while the top five was closed out by Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl.

It was similar scenario in the MX2 category as Jeremy Seewer (Suzuki World MX2) and Pauls Jonass (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) shared race wins, also levelling out on points at the conclusion of the day.

Seewer was rewarded with the overall, making it his second-consecutive victory against championship rival Jonass, who continues the control the category with a 38-point advantage in the standings.

America’s Thomas Covington (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) was third in another impressive performance, while to top five was concluded by Benoit Paturel (Kemea Yamaha’s Official MX Team) and Julien Lieber (LRT KTM) in fourth and fifth respectively.

Australia’s Hunter Lawrence elected to sit out the event with a back injury, which saw him drop to 10th in the championship standings.

The EMX250 class was won by America’s Tristan Charboneau (BUD Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki), followed by Simone Furlotti (Yamaha SM Action) and Marshal Weltin (BUD Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki), as Australia’s Caleb Grothues (Husqvarna) came in at 29th position.
