South Australian scores MX1 podium amid uncertain future.
Standing on the MX1 podium at Murray Bridge’s fifth round of the 2017 Motul MX Nationals proved Brett Metcalfe can continue to be a contender locally, despite putting together a standalone privateer KTM deal at the 11th-hour.
Third overall on home soil last Sunday for Metcalfe will go some way toward securing a seat for the future, however the longtime international’s career remains in limbo after splitting with SD3 Husqvarna prior to Horsham.
Metcalfe, 33, is looking to lock in a deal that will span the remainder of this season – whether it’s for the remainder of motocross or to commence when to supercross season starts – and through 2018 after moving his young family back to Australia from the US earlier this year.
“I really don’t have any updates as yet,” Metcalfe told MotoOnline.com.au. “Regardless of how the results went at Murray Bridge, it really wasn’t going to change anything for the last half of the season. Really, I just wanted to be at my home race and managed to pull some things together to make it happen, which was awesome with the SA Plasterboard guys.
“It was just a one round thing, so where I go from here is unknown. There are some options out there, but I’m just going to assess everything – I’m not in any major hurry right now to get something done. I want to line up something for supercross at the end of the year and then next year is something to think about as well, because I want to continue to race.
“I’ll see if I can get a program that fits all of those boxes. For the outdoors, I’ll just have to see what comes up, but really I’m just going to have to wait and see what the best option is and what’s available. There are positions available on most brands, but I want to be able to find something for this year and next as well, without having to switch brands again in 2018.”
Metcalfe’s supercross capabilities have largely been overshadowed in recent years by his success outdoors, however a one-off ride in the Adelaide supercross round during 2015 saw him charge to second in the main event. He would make for a formidable signing ahead of the 2017 season-opener in September.
During his American career, Metcalfe finished inside the top five of the regional 250SX standings on three occasions with a career-best of third in the 2010 East Coast series, while his best 450SX championship result was P8 in 2012.
