Indoors winding down as grand prix season approaches.
Australian international Jay Wilson continues to move in a positive direction during the 2017 Arenacross UK series, notching his second-consectutive top five result in Sheffield following a fifth-place performance in Belfast.
Finding his feet late in the season with his second fifth-place finish, the 2015 Motul MX Nationals MX2 champion will look for a strong season finish on 18 February in London before turning his focus to the 2017 MX2 World Championship with the i-Fly JK Yamaha Racing Team.
“It’s taken a couple of rounds but I definitely feel like I’ve found my feet at the Arenacross now,” Wilson told MotoOnline.com.au. “Finishing fifth in the main again over the weekend was another step in the right direction.
“I’m actually a bit bummed that we only have one round left because I’m having a lot of fun racing indoors. But the cool thing is, straight after the last round in London next weekend we’re off to Qatar for the first GP.”
As a rookie in the MX2 category on a world stage, the 22-year-old will take a calculated approach to the 19-round series scheduled to kick off on 25 February at the Losail Motocross Track.
“We haven’t had the most ideal lead up time wise, but I’ve been on the bike riding motocross every week now,” said Wilson. “Even if it’s snowing, I’ve still been out doing my motos. The goal will be to get through the first round, establish where I fit into everything and then go from there.
“We know there will be things to work on and learn from round one, so I’m going to make the most of that then do everything I can to be at my best for the whole season. It’s a long series so you have to be smart and calculated, and be there every weekend.”
Wilson will line up against fellow Australian MX2 World Championship rookies Hunter Lawrence and Caleb Ward at the Qatar opener.
