Penrite Honda’s Gavin Faith concluded the 2016 Australian Supercross Championship as the most winningest rider in the SX2 category, however a costly DNF at Toowoomba’s second round ultimately denied him a third supercross title.

Faith recorded four main event victories out of the six-round series, including back-to-back wins at Sydney’s AUS-X Open double-header last weekend.

The American fell short of the title by just three points following Hayden Mellross’ (DPH Motorsport) devastating mechanical DNF in the dying moments of Sunday’s main, which resulted in Serco Yamaha’s Jackson Richardson being crowned champion.

“It kind of is what it is, I guess,” Faith disappointingly told MotoOnline.com.au. “I gave it my best shot, I went 1-1 this weekend and I won last weekend in Melbourne – there’s nothing really more that I could do.

“I messed up earlier in the season, I just had to put that behind me and put my head down and work for it – there’s no going back in time. I just had to let that go and do the best that I could, and I did, but we came up a little bit short. I was happy with the results and we had a good season – I’m just thankful for that.”

The 24-year-old, who has been a regular contender in the Australian Supercross Championship since 2011 with Yarrive Kosnky’s Penrite Honda outfit, revealed he his eager to return to Australia in 2017.

“I’ve been coming over here for a lot of years,” he continued. “I love it over here – I love all the people and the racing community. It’s been really awesome, it’s treated me really well, so I’m looking forward to coming back in 2017.”
