2008 Australian MX2 (Pro Lites) motocross champion Luke George has claimed victory at the opening round of the FIM Asia Supermoto Championship on Saturday, 3 September in Newcastle, New South Wales.

George entered for the event via a wildcard entry and would lodge the fastest lap in qualifying, awarding him pole position.

After retiring from professional racing in 2010, the Suzuki-mounted rider lead all 20 laps to take a convincing victory over Michael Kirkness and New Zealand’s Richard Dribben.

“I had an absolute ball out there,” George explained. “It was the first time I have ever raced Supermoto and I loved it.”

“While I have raced some club days locally, I haven’t raced professionally since 2010 so it was great to be out there racing against a really talented line-up of racers,” he added. “This is an awesome event and I will definitely be back next year if they will have me.”

Luke Richards and Danny Ham would complete the top five in fourth and fifth respectively.

Sunday will see the premier category take part in a 30-minute moto to conclude the weekend’s racing.
