Wilson’s Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki press release:
Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki’s Todd Waters and Luke Wilson have taken the positives from the weekend and will carry those in to the Grand Finale at Coolum, despite mixed results at Round 9 of the Motul MX Nationals at Toowoomba in Queensland today.
Both Wilson and Waters headed to the round at Toowoomba high on confidence after recently having track time at the Echo Valley venue, however the circuit formed up to be hard pack and slick today, forcing both Suzuki riders to adjust to the differing conditions.
For championship contender Waters, Round 9 saw a theme of fourth placed race results. After collecting fifth in GoPro Superpole this morning with a 1:48.496 lap time, Waters raced to fourth in race one, and then finished in the same position in the second 30-minute moto, to conclude the round just shy of the the Thor MX1 podium, in fourth overall.
For Wilson, Round 9 dished out some up and down results. After qualifying in an impressive 10th position, Wilson unfortunately registered a DNF in the first race of the day due to a bike issue, however in race two Wilson well and truly redeemed himself. Despite a crash on the first lap, Wilson recovered to race to an impressive 10th place in the second moto, handing him 18th overall for the round.
After today’s racing at Toowoomba, Waters continues to maintain third position in Thor MX1 Championship standings on 578 points with only one round remaining, while Wilson now sits in 12th in the MX1 championship standings.
Todd Waters MX1 – 4th Overall (4th, 4th)
“It was a hard day for me, but unfortunately that’s how racing goes sometimes. Toowoomba is normally rutty and quite technical, but the track didn’t form up like that, and both Dean Ferris and Kirk Gibbs ride hard pack tracks very well,” Waters shared.
“In the past I’ve had a lot of success here, but it was hard to make advantages on other riders today, and our starts just weren’t there this weekend.
“Even though today wasn’t the result we were looking for; we are by no means counting ourselves out of this championship. I like Coolum, I ride well in the sand, so I just need to do what I know I can do and see where we end up next weekend.”
Luke Wilson MX1 – 18th Overall (DNF, 10th)
“It was a bit of a tough day for me, we had an issue with the bike in the first race, and that ended up in me having a DNF which was a bit disappointing,” Wilson shared.
“After that we made some changes to the bike, and I lined up for moto two. I didn’t get the best start and I actually crashed on the first lap and had to pull in to the mechanic’s area, but I went back out and managed to get all the way back to 10th position which we were really happy with.
“We have to take the positives from the weekend – I made a big comeback in race two, so it’s good to know that if I didn’t crash I would have been well inside that top ten.”
Neale Wilson – Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki Team Manager
“It wasn’t a perfect weekend for us, but it’s nice that we’re in a position where a tough day at the track is having one rider just shy of the podium, and the other inside that top ten,” Wilson shared.
“When we go to the races we are always looking to get the best results possible, and although this weekend was challenging in some ways, there were a 1ot of positives to take away from the round.
“Luke made a great comeback in that second race, and Todd was very consistent which is important, so we’ll just do what we can to make sure both boys are ready to go for Coolum next weekend.”
“All in all, both riders are healthy, and the team is looking forward to putting in one final big effort for the last round of the year.”
Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki will now begin preparations for the Grand Finale of the 2016 Motul MX Nationals being held at Coolum in Queensland, from August 27 – 28, 2016.
