Dunlop motocross racers recorded another solid weekend of MX Nationals results at the brutal deep-sand track of Wanneroo in Western Australia on Sunday.

Featuring a three-race format, Wanneroo saw plenty of drama as KTM Motocross Racing Team’s MX1 championship leader Kirk Gibbs extended his points lead to 17 markers as the season enters the mid-season break.

After posting a second-fastest time to CDR Yamaha’s Dean Ferris in Super Pole, Gibbs was at his consistent best as the track became increasingly rougher, with 2-3-1 results in his three MX1 outings.

However, it was Ferris who was in the driver’s seat for most of the day. After claiming Super Pole, Ferris stormed to back-to-back wins in the first two races, but came together with Gibbs in the air during the opening lap of the third moto.

Dunlop-equipped Ferris went down hard and DNF’d the race to finish the day in eighth overall, but has reported that he has no major injuries from the incident. He finished the day in eighth overall.

Also in the MX1 class alongside Gibbs at the KTM Motocross Racing Team, Jesse Dobson made a welcome return to racing to chalk up a brace of sixths and a third on his way to fifth overall.

In the fiercely-contested MX2 class, KTM Motocross Racing Team pilot Caleb Ward again proved he excels in the sand with a classy 3-1-4 result from his three races. The solid string of results not only saw him register second overall for the day, but enabled him to jump up to third in the championship standings.

Elsewhere in the MX2 field, DPH Motorsport Yamaha’s Jed Beaton had a challenging day in the sand as he lost the championship-leading red plates. Beaton finished with a 6-7-2 scorecard from his three races – almost winning the final moto – on his way to fifth overall.

“This round was another great result for Dunlop,” said Sabastian Mincone, Dunlop national motorcycle tyre manager. “The MX1 results prove once again that our sand tyre has superior traction in these conditions.

“My congratulations to Kirk for his overall first place for the round and increasing his lead for the series, while Dean was also very strong on the day by setting the fastest Super Pole time and his two race wins.

“In the MX2 class Caleb Ward also had a positive round with his strong overall second place for the day and moving up one more place in the championship points.”

The sixth round of the 2016 MX Nationals will be held in five weeks time at Nowra in New South Wales on Sunday, 3 July.
