Defending Motorcycle champion adds Trucks to 2016 roster.
Dakar Rally winner Toby Price has confirmed he will attempt to contest both the Motorcycle and Truck categories at the 2016 Finke Desert Race in the Northern Territory on 10-13 June.
Red Bull KTM rally ace Price will aim to retain his ‘King of the Desert’ title in the Motorcycle division, while also attempting to become the first person ever to win two categories simultaneously.
The logistically-challenging assault will see Price race his way from Alice Springs down to Finke in the Truck first, before a light aircraft will transport him back in time to complete his Motorcycle leg. That task will be repeated upon return.
“For the last three years I’ve been extremely eager to compete in both classes,” Price commented. “I like a bit of a challenge and something new, we just need to wait and see if we can pull it off, which is the exciting part.
“My interest in the trucks sparked when I started competing in the Stadium Super Trucks Series at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide in 2014. The sponsors have come on board and have been a big help to make this dream of mine come true.”
Price has previously won the Finke Desert Race four times and a fifth Motorcycle class win will see him tie with current record holder Randall Gregory.
While there has been another before Price to compete in both two- and four-wheel categories, this year’s campaign will be the first time a current motorcycle champion will risk a title defence while also trying to claim a truck win.
A win in his rookie truck campaign is a tall order, recent success in the Stadium Super Truck series gives Price some confidence in the seemingly impossible task. He is still recovering from a back injury, but is confident in his ability to compete at the Finke Desert Race.
The multi-terrain two day trek from Alice Springs to Finke and back covers 480 Kilometres of desert with 600 motorcycle and 140 car competitors taking on Australia’s toughest race, as 20,000 spectators line the high-speed trek.
