Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser has taken an emphatic clean-sweep on debut in the premier class of the MXGP World Championship at the Losail Circuit in Qatar.

Current MX2 world champion Gajser, still just 19 years of age, did the double under lights at the opener to become the youngest rider ever to win on debut.

Meanwhile last year’s rookie sensation, the defending MXGP World Champion Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre was second overall with 3-2 results, beating pole-setter Evgeny Bobryshev’s (Team Honda HRC) 2-3 scorecard.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Van Horebeek rode some solid laps this weekend for fourth, which is one place better than he finished last year.

Making up the top five, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli is armed with titles and speed but has never won in Qatar. The Italian was forced to face the same truth once again as he nursed a few injuries home to fifth.

Out of retirement, Suzuki World MXGP’s Ben Townley had a consistent opening round, battling to 11th position in both motos and scoring that same place in 11th overall.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings swept the MX2 class for the overall ahead of Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Dylan Ferrandis and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass.

New Zealand’s Courtney Duncan conquered her first WMX championship round for Yamaha, the Josh Coppins-supported talent comfortably beating home Livia Lancelot and Nancy Van De Ven.

The next round of the 2016 MXGP World Championship will take place on the weekend of 6 March in Suphan Buri, Thailand.
