MX1 champion remains positive despite 22-point deficit.
Reigning MX1 champion Kyle Webster is far from out of the fight in his 2025 ProMX title defence. Despite a tough start to the season and a 22-point gap to rival Jed Beaton after round one, he’s staying composed with seven rounds still to run.
The Western Australian opened his campaign strong at Wonthaggi, taking a tight win in moto one after a close battle with Beaton all the way to the finish.
But in moto two, the roles reversed as Beaton grabbed the early lead, and Webster was forced to chase in what looked set to be another intense showdown between the pair. But it was cut short when Webster made a small error in the rollers, resulting in a heavy crash that left both his bike too damaged to continue and him banged up, but escaping any injuries. Still, Webster is keeping a level head and believes there’s plenty of time to turn things around.
“Obviously, being 22 points down after the first round isn’t ideal,” Webster told MotoOnline. “But the upside is that it’s still early in the season – there’s a lot of racing left. It’d be a lot worse if we were heading into the final rounds. I’m not feeling any urgency right now – the focus is just staying solid each weekend and making the most of every point available.
“It’s tough because Jed [Beaton] and I are always so close, but like I said, there’s still plenty of racing ahead. I’m just going to take it round by round and focus on putting myself in the best position each time, and we’ll see where it all lands at the end – that’s all I can really do.”
Round two of the 2025 Penrite ProMX Championship is set for this Sunday at Appin, with Jed Beaton leading the MX1 standings on 47 points. Nathan Crawford sits second with 37, closely followed by Luke Clout on 36. Webster currently sits P9 on 25 points following a single round.
