Circuit layout for Darwin's Australian MXGP breaks cover
Purpose-built track set for 2025 construction at Hidden Valley complex.
The covers have been emphatically lifted on the Darwin circuit that’s set to host the MXGP of Australia this September, as the one-and-a-half kilometer, purpose-built race track is set for construction within the Hidden Valley Motor Sports Complex.
Officially announced as taking place in the Top End during May last year, anticipation and intrigue has steadily grown as to what the layout would look like, and the location of the facility in which it would take place.
With a rich heritage of motorsports that includes Supercars, drag racing, speedway, and more, it’s today been revealed that the Hidden Valley Motor Sports Complex will also play host to motocross, with the start straight crossing over the permanent bitumen road course.
Built to what is described as ‘strict international premium standards,’ this allows for bigger jumps, faster straights, and more technical obstacles. A breakdown of the circuit sees 22 corners, 21 jumps, and a 90-metre start straight built with a 70/30 mix of sand and clay.
Australian MXGP icon Jeff Leisk has sung his praises for the circuit, which he believes will be a true test for the world’s best.
“The design Protraxx has delivered is epic,” commented Leisk. “The world’s best riders want to be challenged – pushed to the absolute limit of control – to gain an advantage over their rivals. This track has all the elements to do just that.
“What I also love about the design is that spectators will be able to see most of the track from almost every vantage point. And because it’s part of the Hidden Valley Motor Sports Complex, it has all the facilities needed to make the fan experience world-class.”
The MXGP of Australia will mark the final round of the 2025 championship, featuring the premier MXGP and MX2 categories alongside the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship (WMX). Additionally, the event is also set to feature the debut of two ‘State of Origin’ style support classes for both MX3 and MX85.
A deal between In Front Moto Racing and Northern Territory Major Events Company, alongside Motorcycling Australia, will see the MXGP of Australia on the fixture until 2029, with the option to extend beyond that time.
The inaugural edition of FIM Motocross World Championship – MXGP – competition in the Northern Territory will take place from September 19-21, over two decades since the series last visited Australia.
