Premier class to race separate Supercross Sprint due to track density.
AUSX race direction has made the call to implement split A and B finals for the SX1 class in tomorrow’s four-race main events at the Boost Mobile Supercross Sprint, it was revealed late this afternoon at the Vailo Adelaide 500.
The tight confines of the unique South Australian venue – a first for AUSX alongside the Supercars – Friday’s heat races saw a maximum of 13 riders on track in SX1 and less in SX2.
While the Fox Australian Supercross Championship (AUSX) SX1 main events were originally intended to feature the regular 22-rider field, track density and rider parity saw the decision made to split the premier class main event into A and B finals on safety grounds.
Top riders managed sub-38s lap-times today, which compacts the field and results in lapped traffic despite the sprint-type format. There will be 11 riders in the A final, with 11 more in the B final – to be contested in the morning. There won’t be any opportunity to advance into the A main, which is scheduled into the evening and live on television.
“As per the indication at riders briefing, race direction has reviewed track density after today’s sessions and has made the following decision to adjust the event schedule and formats for the finals,” a statement from AUSX race direction confirmed.
“SX2 will remain one single group with a maximum of 16 riders. SX1 will move to a two-group final – final A and final B, with the top 11 in group A and the next 11 in Group B.”
With the SX2 category already depleted through injury, it will be remain a single main event over the duration of a four-race Supercross Sprint format, with 16 riders since both heats only had eight riders apiece this afternoon.
