Making one final home appearance during the Adelaide 500 weekend.
Retiring South Australian Brett Metcalfe has managed to make it back for what’s anticipated to be his final AUSX start on home soil when the Boost Mobile Supercross Sprint takes off tomorrow alongside the Adelaide 500.
At 40 years of age, long-time international Metcalfe will call time on his legendary full-time career later this month in Melbourne’s 2024 finale, and after missing Wollongong with a calf injury last time out, it was important for him to line up this weekend.
“It’s pretty cool, the second-to-last race for me here in Adelaide,” Mectalfe explained. “This is my home race, so pretty exciting and I always enjoy racing at home. To have a supercross at the Adelaide 500, it’s special and I can’t wait to get out there this weekend – supercross is going to be exposed to a lot of new people and I’m glad to be a part of that for one of my last ones.
“It was a bummer to miss round three at Wollongong, but the decision to sit out and let my calf/tendon heal up was smart. I rode this week and there was no pain – I was feeling good on the bike – and ultimately these final two rounds are what I was building up for. Regardless of what happens, I want to perform well, and hopefully somewhere up near the front. I’m gonna ride this thing out all the way to the end.”
Metcalfe has long been a significant ambassador of the sport on a global scale throughout his career that’s spanned over two decades, and in the twilight years of his competitive time on track, has also been instrumental in young rider development and the general promotion of motocross locally through his Penrite-backed G024 program.
A convincing start to his 2024 Fox Australian Supercross Championship (AUSX) campaign saw him finish sixth overall at Redcliffe 1, before backing that up with P9 on Sunday afternoon. He was ruled out of Wollongong, however, after opting to give a calf strain at the back of his knee additional time to heal.
