Defending SX1 champion Dean Wilson made the early statement that he won’t go down without a fight by comfortably winning both finals at the opening round of the 2024 Fox Australian Supercross Championship at Redcliffe Qld.

It was a Honda Racing 1-2 in the final standings, as fellow international Joey Savatgy claimed second overall, while Empire Kawasaki’s Luke Clout was the best of the Australians in third.

After topping qualifying and winning his heat, Froth Honda Racing’s Wilson continued to turn the screws by claiming the opening final victory.

Aaron Tanti (Boost Mobile Honda Racing) snatched the holeshot, but rapid-fire lead changes saw Clout and Wilson (Froth Honda Racing) take turns heading the pack.

Once Wilson got his nose in front he wouldn’t be challenged and he finished with a 5.6s buffer over championship contender Joey Savatgy (NAPA Auto Parts Honda Racing), while Clout, who bounced back from an early crash, crossed the line third.

Matt Moss (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy) recovered from an average start to finish P4, as Brett Metcalfe began his final professional championship with a P5 finish.

KTM rider Hayden Mellross, Tanti, Joel Wightman (Yamaha), Dylan Wills (GasGas Racing Team) and Jed Beaton (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy) completed the top 10

The final SX1 race of the evening again went the way of Wilson, capping off a perfect start to his title defence.

Wilson scored the holeshot and managed to keep a hungry Savatgy at arm’s length throughout the race, eventually setting off the fireworks with a 1.1s buffer.

By the end of the 10-lap final, the pair had checked out on the rest of the field, with Clout finishing a distant 23 seconds behind in third.

Tanti stayed consistent with a solid P4 result in his first appearance with the Honda team, while the experienced Mellross completed the top five.

Positions six to 10 were filled by Beaton, Metcalfe, Wills, Wightman and Joel Evans (Yamaha).

The second round of the championship will be held tomorrow evening at the same Redcliffe venue.
