After a chaotic night of SX2 racing, Boost Mobile Honda Racing’s Noah Ferguson has taken the spoils at the opening round of the 2024 Fox Australian Supercross Championship (AUSX) at Kayo Stadium, Redcliffe.

Joining him on the round podium after the double-header event were Empire Kawasaki’s Reid Taylor and Yamalube Yamaha Racing’s Ryder Kingsford.

Ferguson won the first of the two finals that saw most of the field struggle with increasingly slippery conditions.

Froth Honda Racing’s Alex Larwood scored the holeshot, but two early crashes in quick succession saw him drop out of contention.

That opened the door for Polyflor Honda Racing rider Brodie Connolly to inherit the early lead, but his team-mate Ferguson seized an opportunity jump to the front soon after, and he went on to win by 3.77s, while Shane McElrath ensured Honda Racing swept the top spots after working his way from the cusp of the top 10 early on.

Taylor and Rhys Budd (Raceline Husqvarna T-Dub Racing) rounded out the top five, while Jayce Cosford (Yamalube Yamaha Racing) came home in P6. Kayden Minear (KTM Racing Team) finished P7 after crashing while pushing for the runner-up spot, while Kingsford crashed out of podium contention early and finished P8.

Boost Mobile Honda Racing’s fastest qualifier, Cole Thompson, finished a disappointing ninth, while Myles Gilmore (Honda) completed the top 10.

The second SX2 final saw Kingsford bounce back to take the win in another dramatic race.

After Larwood scored his second holeshot of the night, Taylor, then Connolly took turns at the front of the pack.

The Honda rider looked like the man to beat, but he dropped down the leaderboard when he snagged a tuff-block, then was involved in a three-rider pileup with his two championship-contending team-mates, McElrath and Thompson.

Up front, Kingsford jumped by Taylor for the lead and eventual race win by 2.7s, with Larwood bouncing back from his tough first race to finish third.

Cosford and Ferguson claimed the remaining top five positions, and Ferguson’s 1-5 result was enough to secure the round win on home soil.

Minear, Kaleb Barham (Yamalube Yamaha Racing), Thompson, Liam Atkinson (Triumph) and Jack Kukas (Husqvarna) secured the remaining top 10 spots.

The action recommences tomorrow at Kayo Stadium at Redcliffe, where the second round of the championship will be held.
