A number of Penrite ProMX Championship regulars completed a wildcard appearance at China’s penultimate round of the 2024 MXGP World Championship yesterday, the result sheets highlighted by Jayce Cosford (Yamalube Yamaha Racing) in the MX2 category.

The selection of wildcards that included Cosford, Brodie Connolly (Honda Racing), Kirk Gibbs (GasGas Racing Team), and Todd Waters (Raceline Husqvarna Tdub Racing) was part of a promotional exercise for the MXGP of Australia, which is due to be staged in Darwin next year.

Cosford led the ProMX contingent with 15-11 moto scores for 12th overall, while New Zealander and recently-crowned Australian MX2 champion Connolly saw his wildcard appearance come to an end just six laps into the opening moto, forcing him to withdraw from the final outing of the weekend.

In the MXGP category, Gibbs registered 16-12 race results to be classified 14th overall, while former MXGP podium sitter Waters suffered a DNF in moto one before bouncing back for 13th in the second encounter, crediting him 18th overall.

The grand prix in Shanghai saw reigning champion Jorge Prado (Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing) reclaim the red-plate after securing the MXGP overall victory, while Lucas Coenen (Husqvarna Factory Racing) emerged victorious in the MX2 class.
