Making a one-off appearance for 2024 at Afyonkarahisar circuit.
Triple Australian champion Charli Cannon will return to international competition in Turkey on September 7-8, set to make her first appearance of the year in the final round of the 2024 MXW World Championship.
Cannon, 19, contested select rounds overseas last season before transferring from Yamaha to Honda and largely focusing on her domestic commitments. She will be aligned with the JM Racing MXGP team next weekend.
It’s expected that Cannon will return to the world championship full-time in 2025, which would likely be in addition to targeting a fourth Australian crown. Younger brother Jake Cannon – the new MX3 champion with Honda Racing – is also understood to be heading to Europe next year.
“Last year was an eye-opening experience, at times it felt rushed,” Cannon commented. “This time, I’ve arrived two weeks early to do some testing and training before competing in Turkey. I hope this preparation will improve my overall result. The goal is a podium finish, but I’m mindful of the competition.
“I hope the national and international calendars don’t clash because I love racing at home and I believe we’re collectively raising awareness and interest in women’s racing in Australia. At the final round, we had 28 female entrants, which is an incredible achievement.”
Cannon will compete at Afyonkarahisar with support of her usual SCT Logistics Honda Racing team, as well as the Northern Territory Major Events Company, which will play host to the Australian round of MXGP in Darwin next September – including the MXW category for the first time.
