Former international Brett Metcalfe has confirmed this weekend’s season finale at Queensland Moto Park will be his last Penrite ProMX appearance as a professional racer, calling time on a 24-year career at 40 years of age.

Metcalfe has been a mainstay in the domestic championship since making a full-time return to Australia in 2017, racing for multiple organisations before forming his own independent operation Penrite Go24 in 2023.

The fan favourite’s 2024 season has yielded a number of strong performances, however the realities of professional racing as he enters his 40s have prompted Metcalfe to officially retire from the sport.

“It’s time – it’s been a solid year, I’m really stoked, but this is it,” Metcalfe revealed. “Coming into this season, I had a feeling this would be it, but I wasn’t sure. In the last month, I was like this [it] – my body is not recovering as good as it needs to.

“I can still hold a good pace and everything, but I don’t want to be out there just circulating laps – I want to be up front. I’m still kind of able to do that here and there, but not as much as I’d like to. This is it, this is the last national for me in 2024 as a professional racer.”

The South Australian’s international career started with a full-time campaign in the 2002 125cc Motocross World Championship before moving to America in 2003, where he enjoyed a lengthy career that included runner-up honours in the 2010 Pro Motocross 450MX championship and an overall victory in 2011, along with racing for multiple factory teams across a decade.

Metcalfe contested the Canadian Motocross Championship in 2013 which he went on to win before landing a guest ride at Monster Energy Kawasaki for the 2014 outdoor season, replacing an injured Ryan Villopoto.

In 2015, the number 24 raced both AMA Supercross and the Canadian outdoor series while also appearing in the Australian Supercross Championship, as 2016 saw him make multiple domestic appearances ahead of his final international campaign in Canada.

Metcalfe is currently ranked seventh in the 2024 ProMX standings as practice and qualifying take place today at Queensland Moto Park, while tomorrow will see the final two motos of the season unfold.
