Premier class rookie cleared to ride following severe friction burn.
Four-time national MX2 champion Wilson Todd isn’t ruling out a potential return to racing at MX Farm’s penultimate round of the 2024 Penrite ProMX Championship next month, the MX1 rookie recently cleared to commence riding after suffering a severe friction burn in April.
The Honda Racing rider underwent a skin graft earlier this year after a ‘common’ crash while training caused an extensive friction burn to the back of his leg, sidelining him for several months.
The Queenslander revealed he was forced to take almost three months off completely in order to allow the skin to grow, the challenging area of the wound adding to the lengthy recovery period.
Todd was on-hand at Toowoomba’s sixth round on Sunday, where he picked up his practice bike to recommence training, indicating a return to racing at the final two rounds of the championship – which will run back-to-back at MX Farm and Queensland Moto Park – are not off the table ahead his maiden Australian Supercross Championship campaign in the premier class.
“I had about two and a half months off, just trying to grow some skin on the back of my leg,” Todd explained to MotoOnline. “So with all the new skin grafts and everything, I had to just keep my leg straight for so long to try and make sure the skin would stick there. So I’ve been back into it – back training – and I’ve just done a handful of slow rides on the bike.
“I just picked up my practice bike here today at Toowoomba, and I’ll start doing some riding – proper riding – I’ve been putting around on a demo bike, but I’ll get back into normal training. If I feel all right for the last two, I might come and make an appearance, if not, then it will be supercross.”
Todd only managed two rounds in his highly-anticipated transition to the MX1 category before suffering the injury, where he was ranked fifth in the championship standings at the time.
