SX1 victory for Clout in CDR Yamaha send-off ends Honda's win streak.
Dean Wilson has made the 2023 Fox Australian Supercross Championship one to remember for Honda Racing, as he clinched the SX1 title with a runner-up result to CDR Yamaha Monster Energy’s Luke Clout at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium.
While Wilson’s series win ensured the team left finished the year with the SX1, SX2 and SX3 trophies, it was an even more emotional night for Luke Clout – his SX1 final win marked a significant return from two torrid years of injuries, and was his last race with the CDR Yamaha team.
Clout led the race from the first turn, and after stretching out a comfortable seven-second lead over the field, cruised to a four-second win over 2023 champion Wilson – a performance that also saw Clout leap into second in the overall standings.
Wilson started the SX1 final in sixth place, but gradually worked his way through the front-runners, despite making a series of small errors along the way around the challenging circuit.
A clearly uncomfortable Justin Brayton (Boost Mobile Honda Racing), who revealed he’d broken his scapula at the Newcastle round, put in a gritty performance to finish the night on the podium, as Josh Hill (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy) and Wills (Boom Racing Husqvarna) completed the top five positions.
Joel Wightman (Yamaha), Kyle Webster (Boost Mobile Honda Racing), Brad West (Yamaha), Luke Zielinski (Yamaha) and Joel Evans (Yamaha) filled positions sixth through to 10th at the end of the 20-lap final race.
In the final championship standings, Wilson racked up 122 points, ahead of Clout (95) and Hill (94).
