Final preparations are underway for this weekend’s AMX MX Open at Wonthaggi, riders and teams ready to battle for a final time in 2021 with over 260 entries confirmed across all classes.
The event will provide a platform for rivalries to reignite and competitors to get the last laugh for the season, as previously revealed, the Pro Open class is stacked with top national talent.
It’s sure to be an intriguing spectacle – seeing current ProMX MX1 champion take on the likes of returning Honda Racing’s Dean Ferris and MX2 champion Kyle Webster graduating to 450 machinery and sure to be a formidable opponent.
New CDR Monster Energy Yamaha team signing Aaron Tanti could prove to be a dark horse, having finished the condensed 2021 ProMX championship on a high with a podium in moto two at Maitland. He’s also had the chance to compete at state races during the break, achieving some credible results racing against the likes of Todd Waters and Ferris.
Brett Metcalfe and Hayden Mellross – both yet to have officially announced their plans for season 2022 – will be looking to showcase their abilities. Mellross has previously indicated that he felt the pandemic restricted him from proving himself in CDR Yamaha colours, the AMX MX open providing a final opportunity for him to do so. Metcalfe has proven speed around the Wonthaggi circuit, winning the season-opening race of the 2021 ProMX Championship at the venue.
In Pro Lites, Yamalube Yamaha Racing’s Rhys Budd will have the chance to strengthen his already impressive 2021 MX2 campaign, as Empire Kawasaki’s Haruki Yokoyama gets to see how he stacks up against a selection of Australia’s top riders in the class. The WBR Yamaha team will also be present, using the event to launch their new riders.
With equal prize money on offer for female and male competitors, top female talent from around the country such as Emma Milesevic and Taylah McCutcheon will get to opportunity to kick-start their preparations into next season positively. Top junior racers will also be on display, the junior classes being near capacity for the event.
