Team Honda HRC’s Jett Lawrence admits his bike settings were off at RedBud’s Lucas Oil Pro Motocross national on the weekend, the Australian still salvaging a podium in the process.

Despite winning the opening moto, the teenager insisted his bike ‘wasn’t good at all’, explaining he wouldn’t be able to challenge overall winner RJ Hampshire (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) had he closed the gap.

Lawrence stated the set-up improved for moto two, which saw him charge from the rear of the field to finish in sixth, granting him third overall.

“The bike setting in the first one wasn’t good at all – I couldn’t charge at all,” Lawrence explained. “I had RJ [Hampshire] – he was charging, and if he caught me, I didn’t really have any ammo to fight because the bike was just handling terrible and it felt like if I pushed, I would’ve KO’d myself. I was pretty limited in that one.

“The second one, we fixed the bike – the bike was working way better, but I didn’t give myself a very good run at all with winning or getting in a podium position.

“I think I came from 37th to sixth, so I think that’s pretty good – I think I definitely made a lot of passes – maybe the most passes of the day with that. I think if you look at the results, yeah it sucks – I lost three points – but you have to look at the positives and it was a strong ride that I don’t think many people in this class could do that.”

Lawrence still maintains the championship lead with an eight-point advantage over Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Star Yamaha).
