Honda Racing rider in the championship mix at the halfway mark.
Former Australian champion Kirk Gibbs believes he’s in a ‘reasonable position’ in the MX1 title fight after coming off another race victory at Maitland’s third round of Penrite ProMX last weekend.
The Honda Racing rider has struck up two race wins so far in the back-to-back format this season, his victory in the final outing on Sunday granting him a 2-3-1 scorecard for second overall.
Despite sitting fourth in the championship standings, the South Australian is still a realistic chance of fighting for the premier class crown, sitting a slender seven points shy of red-plate holder Luke Clout (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy).
“Obviously, I’m in a reasonable position,” Gibbs told MotoOnline.com.au. “Time has been of the essence for us – although it’s a bummer Gillman got cancelled, it did us favours. It’s a brand-new bike and we’re trying to chase settings – and it’s all new to me being on a different brand again.
“Hats off to the Honda guys and Dan at MXRP – we’ve worked hard in the break, and that showed – we got some good starts and I feel the bike was handling a lot better. We’re in a good position and there’s another month break, so we have more stuff to try and do.
“I think we’re in a good position and I feel confident. I just have to keep chipping away – it’s a tough, tough series and there’s eight really good guys who can win races. I just have to keep my head down and keep pushing.”
ProMX is scheduled to return on 25 July at Wodonga in Victoria.
