Recently crowned champion pushing for local talent to be selected for Team Australia.
Recently crowned Pirelli MX Nationals MX1 champion Todd Waters is hopeful selectors for Team Australia’s 2019 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) squad grant the opportunity to a youthful contender racing the domestic series.
Waters, who’s represented Australia at the prestigious event on four occasions in his career, believes being offered the opportunity at a young age led to him being signed by factory Husqvarna in the MXGP World Championship for the 2014 season.
The DPH Motorsport Husqvarna ace has suggested he won’t put his hand up for this year’s team, and would instead rather hand the chance to a youthful talent seeking an international ride, such as teammate and dual Australian MX2 champion Wilson Todd.
“I’m at the point in my career where I’ve done MXoN, raced world championship races and stuff, and I’m content racing here in Australia,” Waters explained to MotoOnline.com.au. “For me, it’s a difficult one – of course I want to race MXoN – it’s the biggest race in the world, but on the other hand, there are young riders like Wilson Todd and a bunch of guys that I’d like to give the opportunity to them.
“Young Wilson, who is my teammate this year, I’d love to see him have a crack because he’s never raced Des Nations before. It’s a great opportunity for young riders to get there name out there, and it’s what leads to getting a ride overseas.
“That was my breakthrough in my world championship campaign, and same with Dean Ferris – once we got a ride in Des Nations, that put out name out there and we went overseas that next year. The MXoN is a race with a big opportunity, it would be good to give it to a young kid like Wilson who’s just come off a championship.”
A host of countries have announced their teams for the Assen event scheduled on 28-29 September, while Team Australia is expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
