Inaugural Monster Energy Cup victor makes surprise return.
Four-time Monster Energy AMA Supercross champion Ryan Villopoto will come out of the retirement to contest today’s Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas.
Villopoto, who captured victory at the inaugural Monster Energy Cup in 2011, retired from professional racing in 2015, confirming at yesterday’s press conference that he will line up aboard his Yamaha YZ450F in the Triple Crown format.
“It’s an awesome event that Monster Energy puts on, and $1-million is the biggest payday we can get in a night,” Villopoto commented. “I’ll be riding press day today, practice tomorrow and I’ll be gating up tomorrow night for the first time in a long time while getting ready for Australia.
“If there’s anytime to do it, it’s an event like this where the track isn’t super gnarly and guys are kind of in limbo from outdoors to supercross. I’ve been riding and feeling okay, so why not?”
The number two is set appear at the Monster Energy AUS-X Open in Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena next month, marking his second time at the prestigious Australian event.
