Herlings and Cairoli trade wins at MXGP of Indonesia

Vlaanderen breaks through for maiden MX2 overall victory.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing duo Jeffrey Herlings and Antonio Cairoli have traded race wins at round 12 of the 2018 MXGP World Championship in Pangkal Pinang, Indonesia, although it was Herlings who was credited the overall victory on return from injury after capturing in the final moto.

The pair tied on 47 points for the round with 1-2 finishes, which resulted in Herlings’ points advantage remaining at 12 points after he was forced to accept an extensive loss due to his absence at the previous round.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre returned to the podium in third, levelling on points with Honda HRC’s Tim Gajser, while it was Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing’s Clement Desalle who concluded the top five.

Australian Todd Waters (Honda HRC) improved for a 15-14 scorecard, granting him 15th overall, followed by compatriot and wildcard entrant Lewis Stewart (Husqvarna) in 20th.

In the MX2 category, Honda HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen broke through for victory with his 3-1 results providing him the edge for a career-first triumph.

American Thomas Covington (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) wound up in second, two points shy of first, as the podium was completed by Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado.

Ben Watson (Kemea Yamaha Official MX2) and points leader Pauls Jonass (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) were fourth and fifth respectively, while Aussie contender Hunter Lawrence (114 Motorsport Honda) has elected to skip the Indonesian rounds in favour of training in the US to regain his confidence.

The next stop on the MXGP World Championship calendar is scheduled for this weekend at Semarang in Indonesia.
