Dutchman injures collarbone in training incident.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing has revealed current MXGP World Championship points leader Jeffrey Herlings is in doubt for this weekend’s 11th round at Ottobiano in Italy.
It’s understood the Dutchman suffered a broken collarbone while training this week and will undergo immediate surgery to repair the damage, which has a high chance of forcing him to withdraw from the Italian round.
The multi-time world champion holds a healthy 62-point advantage over Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate and defending champion Antonio Cairoli, however a large portion of that lead could be forfeited if he’s deemed unfit to race.
Herlings, who’s dominated this year’s championship with seven perfect 1-1 scorecards to his name, is notorious for riding through injuries, most notably making premature return to action in 2014 with a broken femur in an effort to seal the MX2 World Championship at Mexico’s finale.
