Herlings victorious in Matterley Basin MXGP thriller
Australians Beaton and Lawrence suffer difficult weekend in Great Britain.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jefrey Herlings stormed to victory at Matterley Basin’s ninth round of the MXGP World Championship at the weekend, boosting his points lead in the process.
It was a thrilling round in Great Britain, as Herlings and teammate Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) put on an excellent display, trading passes and riding aggressively for the number one spot.
Ultimately, Cairoli would be credited runner up for the day with a pair of seconds, while former champion Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing) closed out the top three.
Clement Desalle (Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing) and Tim Gajser (Honda HRC) both tied on points with Febvre for third, however were awarded fourth and fifth respectively on countback.
In the MX2 division, reigning world champion Pauls Jonass (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) returned to the top step of the podium, defeating teammate Jorge Prado (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) in both outings.
Third was awarded to Calvin Vlaanderen (Honda HRC), as Ben Watson (Kemea Yamaha Official MX2) and Thomas Covington (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) concluded the first five.
It was a challenging weekend for Aussies Hunter Lawrence (114 Motorsport Honda) and Jed Beaton (F&H Racing Kawasaki), with Lawrence mustering up 18th overall on return from a concussion, while Beaton earned a solid sixth in moto one before being forced to eject mid-air in a horrific crash during race two, which he is understood to have broken both of his legs in the incident – more to come.
Fellow Australian Jett Lawrence (Suzuki) contesting the EMX250 division wound up 18th overall. The next round on the MXGP World Championship calendar will take place at Saint Jean d’Angely in France on 10 June.
