Youthful talent shines at Murray Bridge's fifth round of the MX Nationals.
Husqvarna-mounted privateer Jy Roberts believes the career-first MX2 podium he secured today at Murray Bridge’s fifth round of the Pirelli MX Nationals in South Australia is a greater reward than the race win he earned in the final moto of the day.
Roberts, a rookie in the quarter-litre division, bounced back from a seventh in the opening affair to take complete control of moto two, hole-shotting and leading the field across the line with a commanding 7.126s advantage.
“I’m definitely stoked with the win,” Roberts expressed to MotoOnline.com.au. “I didn’t have the best race in moto one and I had to fight my way through the field. In the second moto I hole-shotted, put in some solid laps and rode my own race.
“On the outside I was composed, but on the inside I wasn’t stressing – I just didn’t want to make a mistake or crash – I just had to remain focused. I definitely think the overall podium feels better, that’s the better result in the big picture, but I’m so stoked with the win. I’ve been working on my weaknesses from the opening rounds, so I’m definitely happy to finally make it onto the podium.”
The result is an incredible boost for the youthful New South Welshman, who was cruelly denied of the MXD title in 2017 when he suffered an arm injury at the championship-deciding finale after leading for much of the series.
Roberts has now been elevated to ninth in the overall standings as the MX Nationals heads into a month-long break, scheduled to return on 1 July at Conondale in Queensland.
