Former Australian MX2 champion Jay Wilson admits he had to force his way around Wonthaggi’s circuit in Sunday’s edition of the Pirelli MX Nationals double-header.

Wilson says he failed to capitalise on track position during Saturday’s third round, ultimately seing him wind up in fourth overall, just one point shy of the podium.

Sunday’s conditions were brutal and tested the entire MX Nationals contingent, which resulted in the Yamalube Yamaha Racing rider becoming stale with the venue as he pushed through two gruelling motos.

“When I look back at the weekend, I know there are things I would do differently if I had the chance,” said Wilson, who collected 5-14 race results in round four. “I don’t get too worked up about the results, I just focus on the way I ride and the decisions I make on the track and I need to learn from them and be better next week.

“Saturday I had good speed and track position but I didn’t make the most of it, while Sunday I was just over riding the track and trying to force my way around the track rather than ride with instinct and feel.

“If I can take a few things I didn’t do well at Wonthaggi and put them into practice during the week and on the racetrack this weekend at Murray Bridge, I’m sure I can be a front runner.”

Remaining optimistic on his progression so far this season, the factory Yamaha ace will have another opportunity to showcase his talent this weekend at Murray Bridge in South Australia before the MX Nationals heads into a month-long break.
