Herlings bolsters points lead with dominant German MXGP victory
Prado earns MX2 top honours as Australia's Beaton secures top five.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings has strengthened his points lead to 48 after notching up a perfect 1-1 scorecard at Sunday’s eighth round of the 2018 MXGP World Championship in Teutschenthal, Germany.
The Dutchman proved to be a class above the field as he dominated proceedings, securing a pair of commanding race wins to defeat former world champion Tim Gajser (Honda HRC), who strung together two runner-up results for second overall.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin put in a ultra-consistent day as his pair of third place results granted him the final spot on the podium, while Clement Desalle (Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing) and Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing) closed out the top five.
Defending world champion Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) finished outside of the first five in sixth, damaging his hopes of tightening the points deficit to teammate Herlings.
In the MX2 category, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado tied on points for victory with teammate and series leader Pauls Jonass (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), the pair trading race wins, however it was Prado who was awarded the top spot on countback.
Calvin Vlaanderen (Honda HRC) completed the podium in third with dual third place results, as Ben Watson (Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Ben Watson) and Aussie Jed Beaton (F&H Racing Kawasaki) rounded out the first five. Compatriot Hunter Lawrence (Team 114 Motorsport Honda) was denied a doctor’s clearance after hitting his head last weekend, ultimately ruling him out of the round.
In the Women’s championship, New Zealand ace Courtney Duncan (Yamaha) dominated the class with two race victories, defeating Kiara Fontanesi (Yamaha) and Larissa Papenmeier (Suzuki). Duncan now leads the championship by 15 markers.
In the fourth round of the European Motocross Championship, Australian EMX250 contenders Jett Lawrence (Suzuki) and Caleb Grothues (Husqvarna) wound up 11th and 24th overall respectively.
The next stop on the MXGP calendar is scheduled for 3 June at Matterley Basin in Great Britain, marking the ninth round of the prestigious series.
