Factory Husqvarna ace still holds 14-point advantage ahead of Las Vegas finale.
Jason Anderson’s hopes of wrapping up a maiden Monster AMA Supercross Championship at the weekend’s penultimate round in Salt Lake City were crushed when he was caught up in a first turn incident, ultimately resulting in significant wheel damage.
The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider, who entered the weekend with a healthy 34-point advantage, was forced into the mechanics area during the main event, where his front wheel was frantically changed after a number of spokes were ripped out.
It caused the number 21 to be put down a lap, however he was able un-lap himself to salvage 17th, which now sees him 14 markers in front of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Marvin Musquin.
“I was pretty good in practice all day,” Anderson commented. “I had a solid heat race and qualified well. I just went down in the first turn in the main and had to go all the way around the track.
“I broke some spokes in the first turn and had to come into the mechanics area to get my front wheel changed. By that time I was two laps down. I was able to un-lap myself and get up to 17th and at least get some points. I’m going into next week in Vegas with a 14 point lead.”
If Anderson captures the title this weekend at the final round in Las Vegas after leading the championship for close to its entirety, he’ll become the premier class supercross champion for the Husqvarna brand.
