European-based teenager could return home for Australian appearance.
World championship contender Hunter Lawrence could be Australia’s next top international to return home for AUS-X Open Sydney after declaring his interest in the world-class supercross event.
Lawrence will move from Europe to the United States at the end of the 2018 season after signing a multi-year contract with Geico Honda, set to reach the heights of American supercross in 2019.
Attending Australia’s marquee event would increasingly connect the 18-year-old Queenslander with a local fan-base and, although it’s uncertain if he would be prepared to return home for next year’s edition, it would be an added opportunity to learn the craft of supercross considering his limited experience.
“It looks cool and I think everyone looks forward to that race at this time of the year in supercross,” Lawrence told MotoOnline.com.au. “I’ve heard the atmosphere and the vibe there is really cool. I think it’s awesome that AME Management and – not just them – everyone involved are bringing some entertainment back, international guys and that type of thing. It’s cool, you know, and I’d love to do it. I haven’t done supercross for two or three years now, so I’d have to brush up on some stuff first [laughs]… I might end up in the cheap seats there!”
This season Lawrence took the grand prix scene by storm as a rookie in MX2 throughout the year and starred for Team Australia at the annual Motocross of Nations event at Matterley Basin in Great Britain, taking individual honours in the MX2 ranks.
