Australian icon still due to return home for third-annual event.
The 2017 Monster Energy AUS-X Open will go ahead without Australia’s greatest-ever export competing on 11-12 November, as Chad Reed has revealed a double ankle fracture has forced him to the sidelines.
Reed was injured in practice for Red Bull Straight Rhythm last weekend and has announced the extent of his injury, which required surgery to speed up the recovery process.
It’s a disappointing turnout for AUS-X Open organisers in the event’s third running, with Reed’s appearance featuring as the major local draw-card alongside a selection of American guests. Despite his injury, Reed has committed to attending the event as a spectator.
“I’ve been slow on the unfortunate news in respect to AUS-X Open,” 35-year-old Reed announced via social media. “The one race on my calendar I look forward to most is the Sydney AUS-X Open. This year’s race was always going to have its challenges, but nothing I wasn’t up for.
“Unfortunately my slight over-jump last week resulted in two fractures to my ankle (talus). I saw my specialist and the best chance at a healthy fast recovery was to do surgery, so unfortunately I won’t be able to compete in Australia in two weeks time, but I’ll make the trip down to see as many fans as possible. As for 2018, The goal remains the same! A1.”
With AUS-X Open off the schedule and still to finalise a plan to race-on in 2018, Reed’s latest indication has been that he will be Husqvarna-mounted for next year’s Monster Energy AMA Supercross season in what would be a privately-operated arrangement aboard an FC 450.
