New South Welshman back on the bike following multiple injuries.
Penrite CRF Honda Racing’s Joel Wightman is on-track to being ready for the upcoming Australian Supercross Championship after multiple chest and collarbone injuries sidelined him for the second half of the Motul MX Nationals.
The New South Welshman returned to riding almost two weeks ago, electing to sit out Coolum’s finale in favour of easing back into being on the bike.
“It’s at the seven-week mark after my injuries,” Wightman told MotoOnline.com.au. “I’ve gotten back on the bike and just started to ease into it. I just jumped onto the motocross tracks here at home, and yeah, I’m pretty much just starting to get a feel for it again.
“I’ve been doing a fair bit of physio and that through the guys at Racesafe, I’ve just been trying to basically get ready for supercross and be ready for Jimboomba on 23 September.
“For the injuries I had, the breaks and everything weren’t actually too bad. I try to look at the positives and think that I got out of it pretty good. The first two to three weeks were pretty hard, but after that I’ve just been able to build myself up.”
A rookie in the premier class, Wightman explained he doesn’t have too many expectations for the opening rounds of supercross, however once he finds his groove, he intends to be a regular inside the top 10.
“I’m really looking forward to supercross,” he continued. “As far as expectations, after the year I’ve with and injuries and trying to rebuild myself, I would say I’m not expecting anything too crazy in the first two rounds, and yeah, then I’d like to build myself up and be well inside the top 10.”
The opening round of the Australian Supercross Championship is scheduled for 23 September, at Jimboomba in Queensland.
