DPH Motorsport Yamaha rider falls short of the MX2 title in Coolum.
Falling short of claiming the 2017 Motul MX Nationals MX2 championship after leading majority of the series has been tough for Wilson Todd to accept after a dramatic and challenging final round in Coolum, Queensland, last weekend.
The DPH Motorsport Yamaha rider entered the weekend with a three-point advantage, however an incident in Saturday’s practice forced him to seek a medical clearance for Sunday’s finale, which he was ultimately granted.
Despite his best efforts and leading half of the second moto, Todd crashed out of the top spot to settle for 3-2 results at the conclusion of the weekend, putting him second in the standings, five points down from title victor Egan Mastin (Davey Motorsports KTM).
“That was a tough weekend,” Todd reflected. “I was confident coming into the meeting that I could win, but the crash on Saturday really threw a spanner in the works, and I’m disappointed that things went the way they did.
“After getting the clearance to race, I wasn’t 100 percent, but I wanted that championship. So in the first race I just hung in there for third, moving into second by two points in the championship.
“[In] the final race, my only option was to win and after leading for the first half, I was confident I could do it, but I hit a hole and crashed, putting me in second and that’s where I stayed.”
The Queensland-native will now switch his attention to the 2017 Australian Supercross Championship, where he’ll endeavour to vie for the SX2 title, commencing on 23 Septemer, at Jimboomba in Queensland.
