Gajser breaks 12-round victory drought with MXGP of Sweden win
Seewer claims MX2 victory as Lawrence finishes ninth.
Defending premier class world champion Tim Gajser (Honda HRC) has broken a 12-round victory drought after racing to the overall win at Sweden’s 16th stop of the 2017 MXGP World Championship, while Jeremy Seewer (Suzuki World MX2) reigned victorious in the MX2 category.
Gajser lodged a highly-impressive 1-2 scorecard for the top spot, negotiating his way to a 9.286s victory in race one before being forced the fight for position in the second outing.
Second for the day was Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing) after recording sixth in moto one, initially leading until a mistake saw his work come undone. He bounced back in race two, capturing the moto victory to finish the day ahead of third place’s Gautier Paulin (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing).
Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing’s Clement Desalle was fourth, as Glenn Coldenhoff (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) rounded out the top five. Points leader Antonio Cairoli (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) endured a challenging day in sixth, however still maintains a 101-point advantage.
After finishing second in opening moto, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings suffered a mechanical failure in race two, denying him of a strong overall placing.
In MX2, Seewer was able to string together an ultra-consistent 2-2 scorecard, awarding him the win over class rookie and race one victor Jorge Prado (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing).
Third overall was credited to championship leader Pauls Jonass (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), who still maintains a healthy 45-point buffer over Seewer in the overall standings.
Concluding the top five for the day was Conrad Mewse (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing) and teammate Thomas Covington, with Covington concluding the day with a race win.
Australian Hunter Lawrence (Suzuki World MX2) displayed a highly promising performance, completing the day 12th overall after lodging 12-6 results. Lawrence was battling for a podium in the final race before a crash saw him relegated a number of positions.
The next round of the MXGP World Championship is scheduled for 3 September at the WW Motocross Park in Florida, USA.
