New South Welshman to make world championship debut.
Australian international Hayden Mellross has confirmed he’ll contest the MXGP of USA at the WW Motocross Park in Jacksonville, Florida, on 3 September.
Mellross, who’s returned home to Australia for the final rounds of the Motul MX Nationals with DPH Motorsport Yamaha, explained a selection of personal sponsors in the area have made it possible for him to enter the event, which will mark his debut in the world championship.
“A lot of people don’t know this, but I’m actually going to back to race the MXGP of America,” Mellross revealed to MotoOnline.com.au. “[There’s] no team deal, the MXGP is just north of Jacksonville, Florida – it’s very, very close to where I’ve spent the last three years. It’s more of a home race for me, I’ve never raced at the track, but it’s a very close race to home.
“I have a lot of personal sponsors in the area and Yamaha is going to help, it’s all of them pitching in to make it possible. It’s an experience and I’ve never raced a MXGP – I kind of want to tick it off the bucket list and you know, go learn – those European guys are extremely fast as well.”
The New South Welshman contested the 2017 Monster Energy AMA Supercross 250SX West Championshop, where he lodged some of the best finishes of his career with a number of top 10 results in the highly-competitive class.
Following tomorrow’s 10th and final round of the MX Nationals in Coolum, Queensland, Mellross will return to the States for the event, before coming home to race the 2017 Australian Supercross Championship with the DPH outfit.
