Sherco Australia press release:
Derek Grundy has once again stolen the show by dominating rounds 3 and 4 of the 2017 Australian Off-Road Championship held at Miva in Queensland over the weekend. Grundy led the charge for the DSR Motul Pirelli Sherco Team in what was a tough weekend of racing.
The Master’s Class campaigner from Tasmania showed class and determination to take the double victory on his Sherco 300 SEF-R after coming under attack from Queensland racers Ian Jenner and Craig Treasure. Grundy’s perfect season to date has given him a 43-point lead in the Championship.
“Derek rode well, like always,” stated DSR Motul Pirelli Sherco Team boss Dave Suter. “He struggled a bit early on Saturday adjusting to the technical nature of the track with multiple obstacles. Conditions were perfect and the track looked great but there were lots of logs and rocks. Derek had some good competition from the other riders but like the true champ he his, he knuckled down and got it done.”
Grundy proved to be the shining light for the DSR Team with Andy Wilksch pulling out of the event at the last minute. Wilksch suffered a big crash at the recent South Australian Off-Road Championship round causing damage to his left thigh. When rest failed to heal the injury Wilksch underwent an MRI that revealed a significant tear in his quadricep.
“Andy’s injury is worse than first thought so he’s off he bike for the time being,” explained Suter. “Getting back to full fitness is the priority yet he still came to Miva to support the Team. Andy is gun on the bike and real team player off it. He was sweeping the floor mats and encouraging Derek and coaching Kate with her riding. He’s seeking physiotherapy and looking to be back on the bike soon.”
DSR Motul Pirelli Sherco’s Kate Norman put in a consistent weekend on her 300 SEF-R contenting in the Women’s Class. Despite struggling with the technical nature of the track, Norman rode to 9th place on both days of competition and holds down 5th place in the Championship.
“Kate struggled with track and wasn’t used to so many logs but did really well and chipped away at her times all weekend,” Suter said. “She stayed on the bike and was fantastic for the team.”
Nic Tomlinson had an uncharacteristic weekend off the pace which left him out of podium contention in the EJ Class for riders under 19.
“Nic struggled in the early sprints with bike set up and after some changes he circulated around and finished fourth both days in the Under-19 Class,” Suter offered.
Tomlinson has now moved back to 4th place in the Championship.
The DSR Motul Pirelli Sherco Team will now concentrate on testing ahead of round 5 and 6 in Renmark, South Australia on June 24-25.
