Verdict:
Regardless of whether it’s hot, taxing conditions or pelting rain, CDR Yamaha’s Dean Ferris continues to stamp his authority on the MX1 championship and already enjoys a comfortable 23-point lead after two rounds. The 2016 champ finished with a 2-1 scorecard to claim the overall around the Macarthur Motorcycle Complex. But the big revelation on Sunday was KTM Motocross Racing Team’s Kirk Gibbs. After claiming a valuable moto 1 victory, the 2015 champ was caught in a first-turn pileup with Kyle Peters (Wilson Coolair Motul Factory Suzuki) and Luke Clout (Crankt Protein Honda Racing) in moto 2, but put his head down and charged through the pack to an impressive sixth place in muddy conditions. His efforts were enough for second oveall, with Crankt Protein Honda Racing’s Todd Waters finishing 6-2 for third overall. Sd3 Husqvarna’s Brett Metcalfe finished an improved fourth overall, with DPH Motorsport Yamaha’s Kade Mosig in fifth.

Verdict:
Serco Yamaha rookie Mitch Evans signalled his arrival to the senior ranks with a comprehensive 1-1 result at Appin. Evans’ effort around the technical, rutted hillside circuit saw him close the gap on series leader Wilson Todd (DPH Motorsport Yamaha). Todd finished third in the opening race in front of the thousands of spectators who gathered to witness the action, then backed it up with a solid second in the final moto. Davey Motorsport KTM’s Egan Mastin rounded out the podium with a hard-fought second and a fourth from the two races. Jackson Richardson (Serco Yamaha) finished the day in fourth overall ahead of Kiwi ironman Hamish Harwood (Davey Motorsports KTM) in fifth.
