Dutch rider remaining focused on current MX2 career with KTM.
Words: Adam Wheeler.
The grand prix of France and the second MXGP fixture in a row saw rumours surface that MX2 supremo Jeffrey Herlings is close to considering a long-term agreement to be an HRC rider for his awaited step into the premier class.
Herlings is contracted to KTM for 2017 and has yet to make a decision on his racing plans for that term but manufacturers are apparently already sniffing around the talented Dutchman who has been in orange for entire pro career.
When quizzed on his availability and increasing marketability (that means Herlings’ next deal is likely to be one of the most lucrative seen in grand prix in recent years) the twenty-one year old – who conducts his own business affairs – was adamant that he hasn’t been in discussions.
“Currently I am not talking to other brands,” he asserted. “There are always rumours and people talking and guessing but it is too early and still a year and a half away. I’m really happy with KTM currently. I cannot tell you today if I will stay or change. For me it is not important yet and I am not talking to other manufacturers.”
After two years of injury problems and losing grip on two world championships it is expected that Herlings will not commit to MXGP until he secures a third career MX2 crown.
If Herlings does finally take the plunge then KTM could nudge up to a six rider representation in the FIM Motocross World Championship with Tony Cairoli, Glenn Coldenhoff (the second of a two year term) and Herlings on the 450 or 350SX-Fs and Pauls Jonass, Davy Pootjes and Jorge Prado in MX2.
