Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli claimed his second FIM Motocross World Championship MXGP victory in a row at the grand prix of Italy in Trentino.

The eight-time world champion used a consistent 1-2 combination to claim the overall win and continue climbing his way up the points standings.

Behind Cairoli it was defending champion Romain Febvre aboard his Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing entry who after a first turn crash in moto one, bounced back with a 6-1 moto scorecard to secure the runner-up spot.

Current points leader and MXGP rookie, Tim Gajser, took heavy falls in both motos but still managed to salvage a solid third place on the day with a pair of fourth place finishes.

Rounding out the podium it was Suzuki World MXGP’s Kevin Strijbos with a 3-6 score for fourth followed by Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl with a 2-8 combination for fifth. New Zealand’s Ben Townley was 15th overall on the day.

Gajser maintains a slim four-point lead over Febvre who sits 21 points ahead of Cairoli who continues to chip away at the points deficit each round.

In the MX2 class it was once again Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings who claimed the overall win, but returning Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Dylan Ferrandis was the news of the day breaking the Dutch rider’s perfect streak.

Ferrandis, returning from a shoulder injury sustained at the beginning of the season, came out swinging in moto one claiming the win ahead of Herlings who was yet to lose a moto in 2016.

Herlings answered back in moto two with the race win and overall victory using his 2-1 scorecard ahead of teammate Pauls Jonass and Ferrandis.

With Herlings on the top step of the podium it was Ferrandis claiming the runner-up position followed by Jonass in third. Rounding out the top five was Samuele Bernardini in fourth and Jeremy Seewer taking fifth.

With his 55th career MX2 overall win in the books, Herlings extends his points lead to 100 points over Seewer in second place followed by Jonass in third another 37 points behind Seewer.

In the EMX250 category it was Thomas Kjer Olsen who captured the overall victory ahead of America’s Darian Sanayei in second and Jorge Prado Garcia in third. Australia’s Hunter Lawrence was fifth overall in Italy with a 4-8 moto scorecard.

The 2016 FIM Motocross World Championship will now head to Talavera de la Reina in Spain on 29 May for round nine of the series.
