Second career 250SX main event win for Savatgy.
Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey earned his fourth Monster Energy Supercross 450SX main event win for the 2016 season at San Diego’s sixth round of the championship.
Dungey kicked off the 20-lap race with the SupercrossLive.com holeshot and quickly opened a gap on the Team Honda HRC duo of Cole Seely and Trey Canard.
The top three went unchanged for the first half of the race until a battle for third began between Canard, RCH Soaring Eagle/Jimmy Johns/Suzuki Factory Racing’s Ken Roczen and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac.
Dungey went unchallenged to claim the race win, with Seely and Roczen finishing an eventual second and third respectively.
“I just tried to keep the pressure low the entire main event; keeping good traction with the rear tire was key,” said Dungey. “I got a good start, which was huge in putting me in a position to win and I just tried to be consistent for all 20 laps. We had to overcome a few things today, but that’s racing. I’m happy to be back on top of the podium.”
Australia’s Chad Reed finished the main event in eighth place aboard his Monster Energy/360fly/Chaparral/Yamaha Factory Racing entry with fellow Aussie Lawson Bopping failing to qualify for the 20-lapper following an unlucky combination of first-turn crashes in his heat race and LCQ.
Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Joey Savatgy became a two-time winner in the Western Regional 250SX class with his strong San Diego main event victory.
Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha’s Cooper Webb, the championship co-leader with Savatgy entering the race, challenged the race leader for the top spot before crashing on lap six.
Savatgy controlled the remainder of the race while Webb put on an impressive charge from fifth back to second place where he would remain as the chequered flag flew. GEICO Honda’s Christian Craig rounded out the podium in third place.
“It feels great to get another win,” said Savatgy. “Cooper tried to take credit away from my first win, so it feels great to get another one. I’m just so excited to be back here and in the points lead.”
Australia’s Hayden Mellross was 13th overall in the 250SX main event, the 51FIFTY Energy Drink Yamaha now sitting 16th in points after six rounds of racing in his rookie supercross season.
