CRF Honda Racing press release:
Under baking hot skies, round four of the 2015 Australian Supercross Championship presented by Penrite Oils roared into life at Jimboomba X Stadium in south-east Queensland last Saturday night, November 21.
CRF Honda Racing team riders Joel Wightman and brothers Joel and Drew Cigliano took to the testing and technical track aboard their Honda CRF250R thumpers, and come the end of the evening, rode away with impressive performances as the prestigious national Championship moves into its closing rounds.
For the second round in a row, Wightman turned on a solid ride in the hotly-contested SX2 class to finish sixth in the Final and in the process hoist himself up to equal eighth place in the Championship standings.
“I loved the technical track at Jimboomba, however the hard-pack conditions made it tough to push super-hard on it,” said Wightman, who ran Pirelli MX32 tyres front and rear to maximise traction on the difficult track surface.
“I got together with another rider and went down in the sand section while running second in my Heat race, which meant I had a bad gate pick for the Final and left me on the outside of the grid, where I didn’t get the start I wanted for the main event. But I’m happy with how I came back through the pack and made good passes to eventually finish sixth.
“With my shoulder now back to 100 percent I’m pumped to race my first indoor Supercross at the next round in Sydney this weekend, where I’m looking to improve on my two sixth place finishes in the last two rounds.”
Round five of the 2015 Australian Supercross Championship will see SX1 and SX2 class riders line up this Saturday night, November 28, at Sydney’s Allphones Areana as part of the debut staging of the AUS-X Open event.
In the Junior Lites class, CRF Honda Racing’s Joel and Drew Cigliano braved the extremely hot conditions at Jimboomba, with Drew finishing eighth overall on the night, while Joel kept his Pirelli-shod CRF250R right up the sharp end of the pack to take an impressive second overall behind Jake McGlashan.
Joel Cigliano now sits third overall in the Junior Lites standings behind Cooper Pozniak and McGlashan with one round remaining, which will be held at Knights Stadium in Melbourne on Saturday, December 5. Drew Cigliano meantime is seventh in the Junior Lites Championship chase.
