Team Motul Suzuki press release:
Team Motul Suzuki’s Matt Moss has returned to the top step of the podium on Saturday night, winning the opening round of the 2015 Australian Supercross Championship.
In changeable conditions throughout the afternoon and into the evening, Moss weathered the storm both on and off the track to continue his amazing run in Australian supercross.
After setting the fastest time during qualifying as the storm clouds rolled in, the two time reigning champion let it be known he was a force to be reckoned with again in 2015, making not one but two explosive moves on his way to the front of the field to take the win in his heat race.
When the gates dropped for the final, Moss fired his 2016 Suzuki RM-Z450 out of the gate, leading the field through the first lap and was never truly challenged on his way to his seventh consecutive supercross win after going through 2014 undefeated.
“That final was actually a bit of a weird race,” Moss admitted despite leading every lap. “I pulled all my tear-offs on the opening lap which made things a bit daunting as there was not much light out there as it was.”
“I played it smart, I knew even if they got onto the back of me it was going to be tough to pass. I felt good out there and felt I was in control of the race, I knew If I needed to turn it up and go I could go.
“It was amazing to be able to get that win for Jay, Jess and the team. It would be great to clean sweep the series again for those guys and have them go out on a high.”
For team-mate Kale Makeham the opening round was a battle of survival after injuring his ankle during practice.
Knowing that he only needed to finish his heat race to qualify for the nights main event and pick up vital championship points, the Victorian rode a controlled race to make the final.
Still feeling the pain in the main event, Makeham’s day continued its challenging path when a rider crashed in front of him on the opening lap causing a pile up that Makeham got caught up in.
Able to re-mount and continue, Makeham pushed through for a 13th place result.
“I started the day of feeling good and was getting the track dialled when I messed up a rhythm section.” Makeham explained.
“I didn’t actually crash, I just over extended my ankle and Racesafe said I have torn some ligaments in there.
“I was able to have it strapped and got through the night and did the best I could to salvage some points.
“I got caught up in a pile up after someone crashed in front of me on the first lap, which did not help things.
“We will go back home and rest up for the week and hopefully be back in action next Saturday.”
After a challenging year to date, Motul Suzuki team manager Jay Foreman was more than pleased to see Moss back on the top step of the podium at Bathurst.
“It is great to be back up where we should be winning races,” Foreman enthused. “The motocross season was a tough one for us and it is good to be back.
“It is a credit to Matt, he has worked so hard and he is so determined to prove everyone wrong and all his hard work has paid off tonight.
Team Motul Suzuki will be back in action again this coming Saturday the 17th of October for round two of the championship being held in Jimboomba, Qld.
