Members of Motorcycling Australia’s Elite Performance Academy (EPA) were tested on and off the bike on the first day of the camp on Saturday.

There was no time for the squad of eight to ease themselves into the final EPA camp for 2015, with the day kicking off with a number of physiological assessments in the morning.

Both the gym and running track at the Australian Institute of Sport’s Pizzey Park were put to good use, with a number of riders recording personal bests across a range of examinations.

The highlight of the morning came from Queensland road racer Troy Guenther, who repeated his performance from the first EPA camp in June to take out the beep test with a level 13.4

The afternoon saw the riders given their first chance to show their dirt-track skills on the Yamaha TTR 125s at Hatchers Raceway.

EPA coach Wayne Maxwell said he was impressed with the aptitude of all eight riders in the corner entry, acceleration and breaking tests.

“To see all the kids run through the drills and the curriculum that we have come up with and see their improvement from the level they started at was fantastic,” Maxwell said.

“They are obviously a bunch of the best young riders that we have here in Australia from four disciplines, so it was very impressive to see them go about it and learn in the way they did.

“In the end, (riders from) different disciplines have their own strengths, so we’re hoping they can all learn off each other and take something away from not only today, but the next two days.”

The final EPA camp for 2015 continues tomorrow, with riders undergoing further on-bike assessments at the Gold Coast Motorsport Training Centre.
