Another MX2 overall elevates Gajser to series lead.
Yamaha Factory Racing Yamalube’s Romain Febvre has clinched the 2015 MXGP World Championship after winning the second moto at Assen’s 16th round of the season on Sunday.
Febvre went 5-1 for second overall in The Netherlands, becoming MXGP champion in his rookie season on board the YZ450F with two rounds remaining.
“I knew with some good starts I could be on the podium again and that was the goal,” Febvre said. “I knew also if I finished in front of [Gautier] Paulin then the championship would be done.
“It didn’t happen in the first moto, but my start was a lot better in the second and I could pass everybody to win and the 2015 world championship! I cannot thank everybody enough. The team did such a good job and gave me a chance last winter. I’m so happy.”
Winning the round overall was Scotsman Shaun Simpson (Hitachi Construction Machinery Revo KTM), winning moto one and then backing that up with third in the second. Joining Simpson and Febvre on the podium was hometown hero Glenn Coldenhoff (Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe).
Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Todd Waters fight through a challenging day of racing in the MXGP class for eighth overall. Ending the first moto inside the top 10 with a respectable ninth, the Aussie had to dig deeper in moto two. Starting in 15th Todd made a number of small mistakes, eventually crossing the line ninth.
Once again powering his FC 350 to two incredible starts, Dean Ferris ended up being the third Husqvarna inside the top 10 with ninth overall. Eighth in moto one, the Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing rider was second at the start of moto, two but a mistake and a crash dropped him to 11th.
Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser took out the MX2 overall ahead of Max Anstie and Kemea Yamaha Yamalube’s Brent Van Doninck and he now leads Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass in the championship by 13 points.
