Verdict:
It was never really in question whether Gibbs would win his first MX Nationals title, more a matter of when, and he did so with a strong ride to third in moto one. You could see just how much it meant to him and the KTM team, taking over the title from two-time champion Matt Moss. While Gibbs did what he had to do at Coolum – and helped teammate Styke in the race for a series podium – it was Townley who reigned supreme on Sunday. Mosig was quickest throughout qualifying, but when it counted Townley went 1-2 for his first overall of the year as a part-timer. Moto two belonged to Monea and an important result it was, because it tied him with Styke in the standings and he got the position on countback – a huge disappointment for Styke after he sat second in the series almost the entire way. So in the end for Coolum it was Townley from Monea and Styke, while fourth overall was good enough to secure the title from Gibbs over Mosig and Monea. It was a thrilling finish, with the depth of the field once again apparent all weekend long.

Verdict:
Wilson was simply all class at Coolum on Sunday, winning both motos convincingly with lap times that rivalled the top of the 450s. Departing Coolum there was no doubt who the deserved champion was and outgoing title holder Clout – who came out firing with by setting Saturday’s pace – was gracious in defeat. It was a memorable championship battle that produced one of those Coolum classics, made even more special by the fact that Wilson was dropped from the official Yamaha MX2 team at the end of last year, saved by Josh Coppins and a very close-knit crew of professionals that took home the number one plate against all odds. Aside from the title fight, Crawford was once again quick in the dark sands and Beaton will take a lot from his strong finish to the season. Ward wasn’t at his best yesterday, but still factored inside the top five, and you have to take your hat off to veteran Katsuya for finishing on the series podium. Well played to all!
