Suzuki has announced major updates to its 2016 model RM-Z250, including the introduction of the Suzuki Holeshot Assist Control (S-HAC), engine upgrades, KYB suspension front and rear, a revised frame geometry and further chassis upgrades.

Tested and developed with the help of Suzuki’s top professional racers, the 2016 Suzuki RM-Z250 features the S-HAC; a selectable launch mode system. Riders choose one of three modes with a simple push button on the left handlebar, selecting the best option for their skill level and starting surface conditions.

The system’s A Mode is designed for hard surfaces or less-than-ideal conditions at the starting gate and B Mode is used when there is better traction and rider’s desire a more aggressive launch is needed. Riders can also choose the standard power launch mode. Proven on the RM-Z450 and factory race bikes, the S-HAC is a racer’s favorite for holeshots.

The RM-Z250 is powered by a 249cc fuel-injected four-stroke engine with modifications to the fuel mapping that help ease engine starting and improve roll-on power feel. Suzuki’s fuel-injection system is made even better with the additional fuel couplers that give riders fuel-delivery customisation that requires no tools.

To upgrade engine performance, more than 80 engine internal parts are redesigned for the 2016 model. The piston is now shot-peening surface treatment for greater durability, however the piston
shape and materials are unchanged. The piston pin is now DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coated, for less friction and greater durability, now using an L-shaped type ring.

Crankshaft inertia weight is reduced (crank web diameter is reduced by 0.5mm) to reduce friction from oil agitation, while the magneto rotor inertia weight is increased to hold balance from reduced crank weight. These changes contribute to reduced engine braking force.

Both intake and exhaust camshafts are changed for wider range of engine performance, plus the intake valves are redesigned to increase compression ratio and increase intake efficiency. Compression ratio is increased from 13.5:1 to 13.75:1. These changes contribute to wider range of power and smoother power delivery.

The decompression system is redesigned for more precise operation. The working angle is smaller than the previous model, and return spring is relocated for precise operation. As a result, the system works more precisely and more efficient.

Additional engine revisions include a redesigned kick drive gear, breather gear, kick idle gear, redesigned cam chain tensioner/adjuster, redesigned crank case, throttle valve idle-set angle and a new clutch cover. For quick fuel adjustment settings to suit riding conditions, two couplers are once again included with the 2016 RM-Z250.

Suzuki engineers gave the 2016 RM-Z250 major suspension upgrades, including a new KYB PSF2 air fork that delivers improved performance, simplified tuning adjustments and reduced weight compared to the traditional spring fork. Previously the RM-Z250 had used Showa suspension.

The new KYB shock uses improved damping adjusters for tuning rebound, high-speed compression – now adjustable by clicks – and low-speed compression. The adjusters are now positioned on top of the shock for easier adjustments.

The RM-Z250 features a new frame designed to amplify the benefits of the suspension updates. The frame delivers improved control through braking bumps, has a lighter feel, and maintains the RM-Z’s cornering mastery.

Revisions include a redesigned steering head pipe (same length as 450), the inside of pivot parts has new rib structure and lower connection part is redesigned, resulting in a lighter frame by 2.5 percent. All of these changes are to optimise the chassis rigidity while reducing the weight. In addition, a new front brake caliper is 10 percent lighter than previous model.

Available from August 2015 at a yet to be announced price, the 2016 Suzuki RM-Z250 will be available in Champion Yellow/Solid Black colourway. Check www.suzukimotorcycles.com.au for further information.
